His name appeared on marriage records again and again.

But never as someone’s spouse.

That changed when Sarah agreed to marry him.

Larry explained that he had been afraid to ask Sarah directly whether she would choose him simply because she cared about him. He knew she was someone who naturally tried to help others, and he worried that she might feel obligated to say yes if he presented the marriage as another problem she could solve.

The letter continued with an apology.

Larry admitted that he should have been more honest. He should have told Sarah that what he wanted most was not paperwork, assistance, or a practical solution.

He wanted to know what it felt like to have someone choose him.

Sarah returned to the courthouse, exactly as Larry had requested in the letter. There, an older clerk named Margaret recognized Larry’s name immediately.

Margaret showed Sarah old marriage records from Larry’s years working at the courthouse. Page after page contained different couples and different dates, but the same familiar signature appeared as a witness.

Larry had quietly helped hundreds of people mark one of the most important moments of their lives.

Then Margaret showed Sarah their own marriage certificate.

For the first time, Larry’s name appeared beside the word “spouse.”
